About Us

Primeros Pasos is a partnership with Galax High School and Virginia Tech's Center of Rural Education (CRE) & Center of Refugee, Migrant, and Displacement (CRMD). Galax City has the fifth highest percentage of English learners in Virginia. Located in a very rural part of the state near the North Carolina border, the schools have far fewer resources and opportunities than highly populated locations in NOVA. Students who have immigrated or are children of immigrants from Central America may face obstacles to further their education and have limited career opportunities exposure in their community. Thus, Virginia Tech's CRE & CRMD started the Galax Project in the Fall Semester of 2023 which searched for Latinx Virginia Tech students and Spanish speaking Virginia Tech students to serve as mentors and inspirational role models to a cohort of Galax High School students. Our goal is to provide mentorship to prevent dropout and equip the Galax High School students with the resources and tools needed in their chapter upon graduation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower and guide high school students as they navigate their academic and personal journeys toward higher education. Through mentorship, we connect students with dedicated university mentors who provide support, insight, and encouragement. We are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where students gain confidence, build essential skills, and explore their future possibilities. By bridging the gap between high school and college, we aim to inspire, educate, and uplift the next generation of scholars and leaders. We commit to an annual goal of providing one hard working mentee a scholarship for their education through fundraisers and donations.

Words from our team

“My goal for this program is to encourage students to graduate high school. But I feel like what is being created will go much deeper than that, even with the program just beginning,” - Elizabeth Stringer-Nunley“We want this to be an ongoing partnership and provide support for students that might hope to go to college but are not sure if it's possible for them.” - Deidre Hand

Committees

In Primeros Pasos, we hold committee meetings, which are separated by our Zoom and in-person visits. Each committee meets biweekly and is composed of the chairperson and six mentors. During these committee meetings, we go over any and all plans, either for our Zoom activities or our in-person itineraries.

2025-2026 Mentors

Zoom Committee

The Zoom committee, led by Adriana Barrientos, come up with our weekly Zoom session schedule. During the zoom sessions we discuss our week, ask questions about each others’ lives, and help with assignments. As the mentoring relationship continues, we expect even deeper conversations about grades, credit accrual for graduation, passing important high-stakes assessments, and life plans after high school.

Visits Committee

The Visits Committee, led by Rebecca Camacho-Bruno, creates the itinerary for our monthly visits that are held at Virginia Tech. This allows for the mentors to pitch in ideas and get into contact with other organizations around campus, further promoting the various Latinx communities at Tech, and cultural outlets.

For instance, "to complete an advanced course in digital marketing within the next six months" would be a great SMART goal if job advancement is a top priority.
